About Cincinnati Reds
The Cincinnati Reds from Cincinnati, Ohio are a professional baseball team who compete as a member club of the National League (NL) Central division. The team was a charter member of the American Association (AA) in 1882 and joined the National League in 1890.
The Reds played in the NL West division from 1969 to 1993, before joining the Central division after it was founded in 1994. They have won five World Series titles, nine NL pennants, one AA pennant, and 10 division titles. The team plays its home games at Great American Ball Park, which opened in 2003 replacing Riverfront Stadium.
The name “Reds” has an interesting history. The very first openly all-professional team was the famous Cincinnati Red Stockings of 1869–1870 and when the current franchise began in 1882 they used that name, shortening it to Red. This unfortunately led to problems in the McCarthy era and the Communist scare so they became known as the Redlegs. Now the shortened popular name of Reds is back in full usage!
Reviewing their five World Series’ victories: 1919 saw a controversial 5-3 win over the Chicago White Sox where eight of the Sox team ended up being banned from baseball on charges of match fixing. It was 1940 before their second Series victory, emerging 4-3 victors over the Detroit Tigers. A thirty-five year gap saw two consecutive Series’ victories, in 1975 against the Boston Red Sox with the Reds winning 4-3 in the decisive seventh game, and even more emphatically 4-0 in 1976 against the NY Yankees. The 70s team was nicknamed the "Big Red Machine". Finally the Reds most recent win was in 1990 when the Reds again did a clean sweep, this time against the much favored Oakland Athletics.
Among the many great Reds players we can list Pete Rose, arguably one of the best hitters of all time. Of his record 4,256 hits, 3,358 came in a Cincinnati uniform for whom he holds the all-time record. Rose was banned from Baseball after he was caught gambling while he was playing and managing. Johnny Bench was the career leader in HR and RBI for the Reds, where he spent his entire 17-year career. Bench was the 1968 NL Rookie of the Year, a part of two World Series Championships, won 10 Gold Gloves, was a 14-time NL All-Star and a 2-time NL MVP. Frank Robinson, the only player to be named MVP in both the NL and AL, played his first 10 years in Cincinnati. He was the 1956 NL Rookie of the Year and 1961 NL MVP amassing 324 HR and 1,009 RBI while batting .307 as a Redleg. Tony Perez was an RBI machine during his time in Cincinnati where he played 16 of 23 years. His 1,192 RBI ranks #2 on the Reds’ all-time list and he ranks #3 in homeruns and #6 in doubles
